My Indigenous Summer Law Student Experience at the CRT

By Brad McQueen, Indigenous Summer Law Student

I am Tatsonottine Dene from Treaty 8 territory, originally from Yellowknife, NWT, in Treaty 11 territory. This summer, I had the opportunity to work with the CRT in the position of the Indigenous Summer Law Student.

Throughout my time at the CRT, I worked on a variety of projects including blog posts, memos, summaries, and legal research. These tasks provided me with invaluable experience and allowed me to develop my skills in areas that I hadn’t previously encountered in my studies. Each project offered a unique learning experience, but one of the highlights of my summer was the chance to present at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC) about what the CRT is and offers.

The presentation at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre was a moment that stands out to me as particularly rewarding. The engagement from the guests was remarkable, and it was clear that the work we are doing at the CRT is making an impact. Seeing the active participation and the insightful discussions that followed my presentation reaffirmed my commitment to access to justice and this important work we do at the CRT.

As I reflect on this summer, I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in the contributions I made, particularly in the ways that I was able to support the CRT’s mandate and engage with the community at VNFC. I look forward to continuing my studies and evolving the legal skills that I picked up at the CRT.

Thank you to everyone at the CRT for this incredible opportunity and for the support and encouragement throughout my work term. This experience has been both inspiring and transformative, and I am grateful to have been a part of it.
