The CRT’s jurisdiction is expanding again!
Starting July 15, 2019 the CRT will be able to resolve disputes about societies and certain types of cooperative associations.
On July 15, we’ll launch our new Solution Explorer area and application form for these types of disputes. As usual, our Solution Explorer offers free legal information and tools that can help you resolve your dispute. To apply for CRT dispute resolution, choose “Make a claim with the CRT” when asked what you’d like to do about your dispute.
In decisions about these types of disputes, the CRT can order a party to:
- Do something
- Stop doing something
- Pay money
Societies
In BC, societies are governed by the Societies Act. The CRT can only take disputes about societies that are incorporated in BC.
Generally, the CRT can take societies disputes about:
- Interpreting legislation, regulations, constitutions or bylaws about societies
- Ordering a society to provide access to its records
- Ordering a society to comply with its bylaws or the Societies Act
But the CRT can’t take disputes about:
- Expelling members
- Terminating membership
- Winding up of the society
- Appealing decisions made by the Registrar of Companies

Cooperative Associations
In BC, cooperative associations are governed by the Cooperative Association Act. The CRT can only take disputes about housing or community service cooperatives in BC.
Generally, the CRT can take cooperative associations disputes about:
- Interpreting legislation, regulations, memoranda or rules about cooperatives
- Ordering a cooperative to provide access to its records
- Ordering a cooperative to comply with its bylaws or the Cooperative Association Act
But the CRT can’t take disputes about:
- Expelling members
- Terminating membership
- Winding up of the cooperative association
- Appealing decisions made by the Registrar of Companies
