Implementation Wrap-Up: Enhanced Accident Benefits – May 2021

As of May 1, 2021, most disputes about injuries from vehicle accidents now come to the CRT. This coincides with the launch of BC’s new “care-based” model of accident compensation.

Under ICBC’s new Enhanced Care coverage launched on May 1, 2021, people are compensated for their injuries according to amounts and categories set by regulation and policy. In most cases, a person won’t be able to sue the person responsible for the accident for damages.

We worked hard to prepare for this expanded area of CRT jurisdiction. We reported on our progress in a series of blog posts, which highlighted aspects of our team’s hard work behind the scenes.

Solution Explorer

The Solution Explorer for vehicle accidents after May 1, 2021 is now live! Read our launch blog post for details.

Simply answer a few questions in the Solution Explorer about your accident, and it will give you specific legal information and the correct application form for your situation.

New Online Application Form

We’ve also launched our online application form for accident benefit disputes, for vehicle accidents that happen on or after May 1, 2021. The Solution Explorer will automatically connect you with this new application form if your dispute is about accident benefits and your accident was on or after May 1, 2021.

This application form was designed from the ground up. We wanted to make it inclusive, accessible, and easier to use. It also gives you information about your next steps, and what to expect during the CRT process generally.

Over the next few months, we’ll be redesigning our other online application forms to match this new style and simplicity.

New Rules

The CRT rules define the processes and procedures for dispute resolution at the CRT. The latest version of the CRT Rules took effect on May 1, 2021. Read our blog post for details.

Presentations and Information Materials

We know that the public has a lot of questions about accident benefit disputes and how the CRT will handle them. We have a few presentations scheduled throughout the summer. All events are listed on our Presentations page.

If you would like the CRT chair or a CRT representative to speak to your organization, or for other media inquiries, please contact us. With the current COVID-19 situation, we can only present by videoconference at this time.

We also have rack cards and other information materials available. We’re in the process of distributing them to public libraries, ServiceBC offices, health practitioners, and other locations across British Columbia.

If you have any questions about this new area of CRT jurisdiction, please contact us. We can’t provide legal advice, but we always welcome feedback.
